Spitchwick Manor had several lodges. Two are listed Grade II. They are private homes and are not open to visitors.
- Higher Lodge: Grade II, listed 3 November 1986 (Historic England list entry 1242056). Formerly the higher lodge of Spitchwick House; late 19th century; squared granite rubble. Grid reference SX 7054 7247
- Lower Lodges: Grade II, listed 23 August 1955 (Historic England list entry 1242136). A pair of lodges of about 1800, with additions. Grid reference SX 7157 7168
The Dartmoor Society was told in 2013 that Dr Blackall built the Higher Lodge. The estate's lodges were also homes for its people. In 1846 a trial at the Devon Assizes turned on a lodge that Lady Ashburton had built and that Mr Hannaford then held, paying a guinea a year for it and the waste land beside it. William French, who spent all his life at the Higher Lodge, was William Crossing's informant about the Ouldsbroom Cross. The story is told on the Spitchwick Manor page.

Go deeper with Dartefacts
Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
