Round cairn near Soussons

This round cairn sits on Soussons Down in the open moorland north west of Soussons. It dates to the Bronze Age, when communities across Dartmoor built cairns as burial monuments and territorial markers. The mound would originally have been more substantial, constructed from stones gathered from the surrounding landscape.

Today the cairn remains as an earthwork on the moor, a quiet reminder of Bronze Age settlement patterns on Dartmoor. The site is a Scheduled Monument, recognised for its archaeological significance. Visitors walking this part of the moor will find themselves in country that has been shaped by human activity for thousands of years.
