This Bronze Age cairn sits on the south western side of Crow Tor, part of the wider landscape of prehistoric monuments that scatter Dartmoor's high ground. The cist, a stone burial chamber, would originally have been covered by the mound of stones that forms the cairn. Such monuments are typical of Dartmoor's early settlement and burial practices, dating back several millennia to a time when the moor was more intensively used and occupied.
Today the site sits in open moorland, exposed to the moor's characteristic weather. It forms part of the archaeological record that speaks to how people lived and died on Dartmoor long before the medieval settlements and tin workings that came later. Visiting the site means walking across moorland, following the contours and horizons that have changed little since the cairn was built.
