This ring cairn sits on the open moorland south west of Seale's Stoke, a monument built during the Bronze Age when Dartmoor was more densely settled and used than it is today. Ring cairns typically mark burial or ceremonial sites, constructed from stones gathered from the surrounding landscape and arranged in a circular form.
Today the cairn forms part of the archaeological palimpsest of Holne Moor, where Bronze Age activity is still legible in the stone circles, barrows and field systems scattered across the moorland. Standing here, you can read the Bronze Age use of Dartmoor as a living, working landscape rather than the wilderness it later became.
