Prehistoric coaxial field system and cairns, an historic enclosure and part of RAF Sharpitor, situated on and around Peek Hill

Peek Hill holds layered evidence of human activity across thousands of years. The coaxial field system, with its distinctive parallel arrangement of boundaries, belongs to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's uplands supported settled communities. Scattered cairns from the same period mark graves or territorial points across the landscape. Later, an historic enclosure was added to this ancient framework, and in the twentieth century the RAF left its own marks here as part of Sharpitor's wartime presence on the moor.
Today, walking the site means reading the land itself. The field boundaries still pattern the ground, worn into the turf and marked by stones. The cairns rise as small mounds, modest monuments to people whose names are long forgotten. This is Dartmoor as a working landscape, shaped and reshaped across centuries.
