One of a group of three cairns, Ringmoor Down

This cairn is one of three surviving Bronze Age burial mounds clustered on Ringmoor Down. The group represents a cemetery used over generations, when families or communities marked their dead with stone cairns that still command the ridge today. Built from stones gathered on the moor itself, they are modest but enduring monuments to the people who worked this upland landscape thousands of years ago.

Ringmoor Down holds the remains of Bronze Age activity across a wider area. Walking across the down, you move through a palimpsest of ancient settlement and burial, where these cairns anchor a sense of deep time on Dartmoor. The open moorland setting means the monuments sit as they have for millennia, visible from distance and part of the visual grammar of the ridge.
