Challacombe Down holds overlapping traces of human activity across many centuries. A prehistoric settlement and cairn sit alongside a Bronze Age reave, one of the moorland stone boundaries that still pattern Dartmoor's high ground. Medieval farmers worked strip fields across the same slopes, their open field system now visible as earthworks in the turf.
Today the site reads as a palimpsest of the moor itself. Tinworks from later periods mark where tin was extracted and processed. Walking here, you move through layers of land use and abandonment, seeing how people shaped and reshaped this high moorland according to their needs and the seasons. The landscape still shows the marks they left.
