Lustleigh Village Hall stands in the middle of Lustleigh, on the road past The Dairy village shop towards the Orchard, opposite the Orchard Garage. It is run by a committee of volunteers as a registered charity (number 272038), and all income goes back into looking after the building.

The hall was rebuilt in 2005 on the site of the original and has both a large hall and a meeting room. The main hall is 16m by 8m with a wooden floor and has been designed with its sound in mind: an acoustic study was part of the build, and it is often used for professional recordings. It holds 131 for a flat seated show, 145 with tiered seating, 161 for dancing and 100 for a fully catered event. A demountable stage is available to hire, tables and chairs are included, and a full sound and light rig can be set up to suit a production.

The meeting room (8m by 4.5m) is carpeted, opens onto the village Orchard and doubles as the refreshment area when something is on in the main hall. The kitchen is semi-commercial, with a range cooker, fridges and freezer, a hot cupboard and dishwashing, plus crockery and cutlery for 100, and serves both rooms through its two hatches.

There is a ramp to the main doors, no steps to any room, a disabled toilet and a baby-change unit, and a hearing loop on request. Free Wi-Fi is available for hirers, and card payments can be arranged for door entries. Parking is on the village roads, with two dedicated disabled spaces outside.

A little history

The first hall opened on 16 November 1911 as the Constitutional Hall, later the Conservative Hall, and has been the centre of village life ever since: meetings, classes, badminton, plays, pantomimes and concerts, fancy dress balls in the 1940s and a children’s Christmas party. The Parish Council took it over in 1976, the same year it became a charity. It has also housed a rifle range since the Home Guard days, and is home to the Lustleigh Home Guard Rifle Club, formed in 1944. The history is drawn from Lustleigh: A Dartmoor Village in Focus, published by The Lustleigh Society, which the hall reproduces with permission.

“All around the hills were silent; and the long pale shadows lay, like flaws of calm on tidal waters; while the "holy circles," where unholy deeds had stained the moor, stood up, like ghosts that have no churchyard.”
