Herne Hole Tor

Herne Hole Tor consists of two granite lumps on rising ground above the prison quarry, about 200 yards east of the larger Rundlestone Tor. It barely registers from above, but viewed from below on the north side it presents as a proper rock wall rising from reeds and long grass, with a distinctive cleft visible from the summit. A hawthorn clings to the edge of the highest pile. Though small, it rewards the short walk from North Hessary with views stretching east and north across Great Mis Tor to Haytor. The tor sits within Dartmoor Prison land, accessed via a wooden stile marked by boundary stones bearing the letters DCP.
