'F' Range Redoubt (remains)

'F' Range Redoubt is one of several fortifications built across Dartmoor in the 1880s, when military planners feared invasion from France. The remains consist of low stone walls and earthworks defining a small defensive position, now softened by decades of moorland reclamation. Standing here, you can trace the geometry of Victorian strategy against the vast, indifferent moor.

The site is unmarked and unvisited by most walkers—part of its appeal. Finding it rewards those willing to navigate rough ground and consult a map. The isolation amplifies the peculiar melancholy of abandoned military works: a snapshot of anxiety and effort now returned to heather and stone.
