Dr Arthur B. Prowse was one of the group of Dartmoor students that Robert Burnard and Sabine Baring-Gould asked to join them in 1894, after their first digs showed that the hut circles repaid proper excavation. The first report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee, on Grimspound, names him with R. N. Worth, R. Hansford Worth and the Rev. W. A. Gordon Gray as “all well acquainted with Dartmoor”.
His lasting contribution is two indexes in the Transactions of the Devonshire Association. The first, in volume 26 (1894), indexes the personal names in Risdon's Survey of Devon. The second, in volume 37 (1905), is An Index of References to Dartmoor and its Borders contained in the Transactions, Vols. I to XXX, pages 482 to 567: a subject-by-subject finding list to everything the Association had printed on the moor in its first forty-three years. R. Hansford Worth lists it in the bibliography of Worth's Dartmoor.
