Enclosure in Parsonage Wood

This scheduled monument is an enclosed settlement set within the woodland of Parsonage Wood. The enclosure survives as earthwork banks and ditches that would have defined and protected a domestic or ritual space during the Bronze Age or Iron Age. Like many Dartmoor enclosures, it reflects the way people organised their landscape and communities in prehistoric times, choosing this wooded setting for reasons now lost to us.
Today the site sits quietly among the trees, its outline still readable in the ground if you know how to look. It forms part of the broader pattern of prehistoric settlement across Dartmoor and the moorland margins, a reminder that the open moor we see now was once far more densely occupied and worked by human hands.
