Crownhill Fort stands sentinel on Dartmoor's open heights, a masterpiece of 19th-century military engineering. Built in the 1860s as part of a chain of coastal defences, its massive earthworks and angular bastions cut dramatically against the moorland sky. The fort was designed to counter a feared French invasion during a period of imperial tension, a threat that ultimately never materialised.
Today, the fort's geometric form creates an almost abstract landscape feature, best appreciated by walking its perimeter and exploring the ditch systems and gun emplacements. The exposed moorland setting means weather can turn quickly, but that's precisely what gives the place its atmospheric character, a monument to Victorian anxiety now absorbed into the wild, weathered character of Dartmoor itself.
