Cairnfield, fields and ring cairn south of Moorgate Farm

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1016634) describes a cairnfield, an irregular field system, a stone hut circle, a cairn with a cist, a ring cairn and two further mounds that may hold burials, overlooked by Rowtor. The scheduling falls into two areas. The ground now lies just outside the Okehampton Range, but it has been much used for training and scores of pits and trenches show it. It lies in the parish of Okehampton Hamlets, about 0.9 km west of Scarey Tor and 2.6 km south-west of Belstone.

At least 29 small mounds form the Bronze Age cairnfield, mostly in the south-west field and 0.2 to 0.7 metres high. Twenty-two are circular, 2.5 to 5.5 metres across, and the rest oval, 3 to 4.5 metres long. The field system is a series of winding low rubble banks making at least five fields added over time. At its north end an oval structure may be a hut circle of about the same age. In the east part is a cairn 8.3 metres across and 0.5 metres high with a pit in its middle, one side marked by a large edge-set stone that may be the edge of a much disturbed cist. In the southern field a circular bank up to 3 metres wide and 0.6 metres high surrounds a space 17.5 metres across. Military pits have cut it in four places, but it is clearly a ring cairn.

Two more mounds south-west of the field system may be burial cairns. One, at SX 59599214, is 6.1 metres across and 0.7 metres high with a small central pit, and the other, a short way south-west at SX 59579212, is 5.8 metres across and 0.6 metres high.
