Cairn with a cist near Shavercombe Tor

This cairn and its associated stone cist, or burial chamber, date to the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor's uplands were more densely settled and used. The monument consists of a mound of stones with a stone-built chamber at its core, typical of burial practices from this period. Such cairns often marked the graves of individuals of status within their communities.

The site sits on open moorland where the Bronze Age landscape is still legible to the walker. Shavercombe Tor rises nearby, and the surrounding area contains other prehistoric monuments, evidence of a complex pattern of settlement, land use and ritual activity that shaped Dartmoor thousands of years ago. Today the cairn remains as a modest but significant marker of that distant past.
