Cairn

Homerton Hill holds a cairnfield, a cluster of stone burial mounds likely built during the Bronze Age, when Dartmoor saw intensive settlement and monument building. These cairns would have marked graves and held ritual significance for the communities living on the high moor, and they sit within a wider landscape of similar monuments that speak to how densely the Bronze Age people engaged with Dartmoor's uplands.

Today the cairns remain as low stone mounds, weathered and softened by millennia. Walking among them, you can sense the enduring relationship between people and this landscape, and understand why Dartmoor's high ground was valued not just for grazing, but as a place to remember the dead and mark sacred ground.
