Hut circle, Watern Oke

This stone hut circle is one of several structures making up an unenclosed settlement at Watern Oke on Dartmoor. Built during the Bronze Age, probably between 1500 and 700 BC, it would have been home to a farming family whose livelihood depended on the moor's rough pasture and arable land. The hut itself survives as a circular foundation of stone rubble, a humble but enduring trace of domestic life on the high moorland.

The settlement sits within the open landscape typical of Dartmoor's prehistoric archaeology, where houses were scattered rather than clustered in villages. Walking here today, you can sense something of the exposure and self-reliance such a life demanded. The hut circle is a scheduled monument, recognized as nationally significant evidence of how people adapted to moorland living in the distant past.
