This scheduled monument preserves the remains of an unenclosed settlement of stone huts, likely dating to the Bronze Age or Iron Age, situated in the open moorland north of Piles Copse. The huts would have been domestic structures, their stone footings still visible on the ground today. Surrounding the settlement are field enclosures and linear earthworks, suggesting a mixed farming landscape where people herded livestock and cultivated crops on the high moor.
The site is one of many such settlements scattered across Dartmoor, where communities lived and worked within the constraints and opportunities of upland terrain. Walking here, you can trace the rough rectangles of stone walls and imagine the daily rhythms of ancient moorland life.
