Buttern Hill coaxial fields and hut circles

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1021218) describes part of the Buttern Hill coaxial field system and two hut circles on the east-facing slope of Buttern Hill. The fields are rubble banks that in places were altered when later historic fields were made, with at least three parallel reaves and other boundaries leading off to make smaller fields and enclosures. The northern hut is 10.1 metres across inside, with a double upright-stone wall 2 metres wide and up to 1.2 metres high, and a gap 1.1 metres wide facing south-south-east is an original doorway protected by a crude straight porch. The southern hut is 4.4 metres across, an earthwork wall 1.3 metres wide with the odd upright stone showing, up to 0.5 metres high. It lies in the parish of Gidleigh, about 1.4 km south of Shilstone Tor and 1.3 km west of Gidleigh.
