The Devon and Exeter Institution

The Devon and Exeter Institution is an independent heritage library and educational charity (no. 1172445) in the Cathedral Close in Exeter. It was founded in 1813 "to promote the general diffusion of Science, Literature and the Arts, and for illustrating the Natural and Civil History of the County of Devon, and the History of the City of Exeter".
The library holds historic local newspapers, maps, prints and drawings, and Dartmoor material. It is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm, with guided tours on Wednesday afternoons, and offers membership.
