The Dartmoor Trust is a registered charity supporting life on Dartmoor: its people, environment and heritage. It has helped fund hundreds of community groups to carry out projects on and around the moor, and relies on donations and legacies to continue. Tony Clark OBE is its chairman.
Its best-known work for visitors and researchers is the Dartmoor Trust Archive, a free online collection of about 100,000 photographs of the moor, together with film and audio, with records going back to the late 1800s. Original items are scanned to National Archive standards, and the digital masters are stored in several secure places so they last for generations. Where an item is in copyright, the copyright stays with its holder, and the Trust asks to be contacted before items are used so the terms can be agreed.
The Archive includes Moor Memories, a collection of recorded audio interviews in which people talk about life on Dartmoor: work, family, childhood, the land and how it has changed. Transcripts are being added over time. For anyone writing about a particular place, farm, village or trade, this is first-hand testimony that exists almost nowhere else.
If you have old Dartmoor photographs, film or recordings, or want to support the Trust's work, contact the Trust through its website.
