The plaque on the cross says it was presented in July 1960 to the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Signals by the people of Bovey Tracey, to mark the help the regiment gave at the celebrations of the town's 700th charter anniversary. The regiment had played a leading part in organising the first Ten Tors expeditions, and when it left Denbury Camp it left the cross to the Ten Tors expedition. It was moved to Okehampton Camp in 1971.
Dartmoor CAM describes it as unique on Dartmoor for its Maltese cross shape and its concrete. It is not a medieval cross and is not in Crossing, whose book is older. The cross is inside the boundary of Okehampton Camp, which is Ministry of Defence land, and can be seen from the public path through the camp towards Yes Tor. Check for firing before you go.

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.

Photograph by Glavind Strachan Photography“It is not an easy place. Walking in from Okehampton direction, for the first hour it's military roads; for the second hour, degraded moor grass and peat cuttings; and for the third hour, the most Molinia-infested, tussock-barren wasteland I have ever experienced on the moor.”
