Hut circle and Bradford Leat, Buttern Hill

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1021219) describes part of the Buttern Hill coaxial field system, a hut circle, a short length of the Bradford Leat and a small clapper bridge on the east-facing slope of Buttern Hill. The fields are rubble banks with the odd upright stone showing, and at least two survive, the western holding the hut circle. The hut is a circular double upright-stone wall 1.4 metres wide and up to 0.95 metres high round a space 7.3 metres across. It lies in the parish of Gidleigh, about 1.4 km north of Scorhill Tor and 1.4 km west of Gidleigh.

The Bradford Leat cuts the east edge of the hut. It carried water from Wildtor Well (SX 63008758) to the tinwork at Bradford Pool (SX 70009100). A court case about it was well documented in the later 17th century, and the leat was given up after it. Two slabs robbed from the hut lie across the leat as a small clapper bridge, 2.1 metres long and 1.6 metres wide.
