Stepping Stones

Dartmeet, Ashburton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 6719 7321

Part of Dartmeet →

Stepping Stones is one of Dartmoor's most evocative river crossings, its flat stones polished by generations of feet and hooves fording the East Dart. Set deep in the moorland landscape, these stones represent the practical infrastructure of the moor's working past, routes used by tinners, farmers, and drovers moving across difficult terrain long before modern roads carved through Dartmoor.

The crossing remains in its original location, offering walkers an intimate moment with both the river and the moor's history. The smooth, worn surface of each stone tells its own story of traffic and time, a tangible connection to the daily journeys of people and animals who traversed this wild country.
