Sixty hut circles, Watern Oke

Watern Oke holds the remains of sixty stone hut circles, the foundations of round dwellings that once sheltered Bronze Age communities on Dartmoor. Unlike the more formal enclosed settlements found elsewhere on the moor, this was an unenclosed village, its houses scattered across the moorland without defensive walls or clear boundaries. The hut circles are visible as low stone rings set into the ground, some more obvious than others depending on the season and the light.

Today the site sits on open moorland, part of the complex landscape of prehistoric Dartmoor. Walking among the circles, you can sense the long-term occupation of this place and the practical knowledge required to live here. The settlement speaks to Bronze Age lifeways on the moor, when communities managed livestock and crops in this exposed landscape over many generations. It remains a scheduled monument and a window into how people built their lives on Dartmoor thousands of years ago.
