Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks

  • What it is: a free website of walks and site guides to Dartmoor's prehistoric monuments
  • Sections: Walks, Sites, Access and Resources
  • Walks: designed around public transport
  • Site pages: photographs, a short description, an OS grid reference and a list of monuments within 2 km

Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks opens with the line that “Dartmoor has a particularly rich abundance of settlements, monuments and ritual sites dating from prehistoric times”, and builds everything round it: walks planned to work with buses, site pages for the best-known monuments, and access notes. The site asks visitors to treat the protected sites with respect.

The Resources section is where it becomes a reference work. It has database listings by type (standing stones, stone rows, stone circles, cists, cairn circles, Neolithic sites, ceremonial complexes, settlements and ancient pools) and tables of cists, cairns, Dartmoor and Devon Iron Age forts, the Dartmoor 365 list and sites near the 171, 172 and 271 bus stops. There is also a map of prehistoric Dartmoor, GPS datasets for the walks, a public transport guide, a database search and a list of guide maps.

For anyone researching the sites, its reports page holds scans of every report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee and of the Devonshire Association's barrow committee, and its articles and books page links useful older texts. A profile page covers Richard Nicholls Worth and R. Hansford Worth, whose excavation and survey work most of the site's reading list descends from.
