Enclosure east of an agglomerated enclosure south-east of Yealm Steps

This scheduled monument is a Bronze Age enclosed settlement, located on the high moorland south-east of Yealm Steps. The site consists of an agglomerated enclosure, a form of settlement where multiple circular or oval structures were grouped together within a defended boundary. Such enclosures are characteristic of Dartmoor's prehistoric settlement pattern, belonging to a period when the moor supported pastoral communities living in close association with their livestock.

Today the site survives as earthworks in the heather and grass. The enclosure banks are low but traceable, and the landscape around it retains evidence of the field systems that once surrounded these dwellings. Standing here, you can sense the long occupation of this high ground and its role in the ancient economy of Dartmoor, even as the moorland has largely reclaimed it.
