Dean Burn

Rattery, Devon

The Dean Burn rises on Dean Moor, on the south-eastern side of Dartmoor, and drops quickly off the high ground towards Buckfastleigh. Its lower valley is a steep, picturesque wooded glen with a string of small waterfalls, long admired as one of the prettiest corners of this part of the moor.

Along with the River Mardle, the Dean Burn is one of the two rivers that powered and watered Buckfastleigh through its woollen-mill days. It rises above the parish of Dean Prior, once served by the poet Robert Herrick.
