Cut Hill incised crosses

Grid ref: SX 6002 8298

  • Grid references: Eastern SX 60021 82981, western SX 59987 83042
  • Distance apart: About 30 to 40 m
  • Date: Most likely twentieth century
  • Cut Hill: 603 m, named from Cut Lane, an old drovers' track

Two crosses are cut on flat rocks flush with the ground on the north side of Cut Hill, between the rain gauge and Cut Lane. Dartmoor Explorations considers them most likely modern, with no real significance, and notes that a letterbox stamp of the 1990s alluded to them. Dartefacts lists them as Cut Hill (E) Cross and Cut Hill (W) Cross among the many small features on the hill, and Legendary Dartmoor names them as the East Crosses and the West Crosses among the rock features used by letterboxers.

Cut Hill is remote high moor, a long walk in from the nearest road, and has a stone row found in 2004.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
