Cross About 6 Metres North-West Of South Harton Farm Gate

Lustleigh, Moretonhampstead, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7724 8227

Part of Lustleigh →

This wayside cross stands a short distance north-west of South Harton Farm Gate on Dartmoor. Like many such crosses scattered across the moor, it likely dates to the medieval period and would have served as a waymarker for travellers crossing the open moorland. These stone crosses were practical landmarks in an age before mapped routes, helping people navigate the featureless expanses of Dartmoor.

Today the cross remains in the landscape near South Harton, a modest but enduring monument to medieval travel and the routes that connected the scattered settlements and farms of Dartmoor. Its position speaks to the importance of these routes across the high ground, and to centuries of people finding their way across the moor.
