Clive Turner

Clive Turner is an entomologist and ecologist specialising in Coleoptera, beetles, with a particular long-standing focus on the fauna of Devon. Natural History Museum specimen records held under institution code NHMUK, searchable via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), name "Clive R. Turner" and a second collector, Toby Turner, as the recorders of beetle specimens gathered on Dartmoor in 2024 at three sites: Berra Tor, Longash and Shaugh Woods.

Turner has published extensively on Devon's beetle fauna in The Coleopterist, the national journal for British beetle recorders, with more than twenty papers and shorter notes to his name over the years. Two representative, fully-cited examples: "Forty-five Coleoptera species new to Devon with notes on other rare or local beetles from the county" (with Martin L. Luff and Toby Turner, The Coleopterist 29(2): 99, 2020), and "Modern Devon records and ecological notes on Sigorus porcus (Fabricius) (Scarabaeidae)" (with Max Anderson, The Coleopterist 29(1): 61, 2020).

In 2024 Turner directed the Dartmoor Dung Beetle Survey, the first study of its kind on the moor, working with commoners across Holne Moor and the Harford and Ugborough commons as part of the Our Upland Commons project. During the survey he identified Atholus bimaculatus, a locally rare clown beetle, at Bittaford next to Harford and Ugborough Common, the first record near Plymouth since the late 1930s.
