St Mary the Virgin at Holne dates from about 1300, with a west tower and transepts, and was enlarged about 1500 by the addition of aisles. It was restored in the late 19th century. The walls are granite rubble, partly rendered, and the tall west tower has a battered base and a battlemented parapet. Inside, low monolithic granite piers carry the arcades.
The finest fittings are of about 1500: a wooden screen in three sections with rich carving and painted figures in the wainscot panels, and a ten-sided carved pulpit on a goblet stem that also keeps its colour. The screen coving is missing. There is a wall monument to Sir Bourchier Wrey of Holne Park, dated 1826.
The writer Charles Kingsley was born in Holne on 12 June 1819, in the vicarage, where his father was curate-in-charge for a few months. Not the same church as St Mary the Virgin, Throwleigh.
