Wotter is a village on the south-western edge of Dartmoor in Devon, in the civil parish of Shaugh Prior, with a Plymouth post town and PL7 postcode. It is young. Before 1901 there were only three buildings here: Wotter Farm, Wotter House and Collard Tor. In 1901 Captain Selleck reopened the abandoned Wotter clay pit, and after 1906 the Dartmoor China Clay Company expanded and new cottages made Wotter the third big village in the parish, after Shaugh Prior and Lee Moor. Wikipedia gives 1906 as the year of its founding.
The parish had 554 people in 1851 and 783 by 1906. Today Wotter has the Moorland Hotel, a Methodist chapel that reopened as Wotter Community Chapel, a village hall and a play area. A GP surgery runs two days a week, and children go to Shaugh Prior Primary School. In January 2010 thirteen homes were evacuated after a barn fire involving fertiliser and chemicals at Higher Bughill Farm.
