Crockernwell is a small village in Devon, 2 miles west of Cheriton Bishop and 12 miles west of Exeter, on the road between Exeter and Okehampton. It is in Drewsteignton parish. It sits on the northern side of Dartmoor, a short way west of Cheriton Cross and Cheriton Bishop, which the Trafalgar Way site places just inside the National Park's northern border.
The Drewsteignton parish history says that in the 17th century up to 100 travellers a year were helped by the parish at Crockernwell. The road was turnpiked and the first stage coach came through in 1795. In 1805 the Golden Lion was a staging post for the dispatch riders carrying the news of Trafalgar. Lieutenant Lapenotiere changed horses there, and a plaque on the stone wall by the shelter in the village centre records it. Drewsteignton's page dates the plaque to 2005.
The village has a Methodist church. No source found gives a population for Crockernwell, or says exactly where the National Park boundary runs through it.
