Two ring cairns near Lower Blackaton

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1002625) describes two ring cairns on a gentle north-facing slope overlooking the valley of the West Webburn River. The scheduling falls in two areas. It lies in the parish of Widecombe in the Moor, about 2 km south-west of Hameldown Tor and 0.7 km south of Challacombe.

The western cairn is a circular bank 2.4 metres wide around an inside 6.1 metres across. An edge-set stone in the south-eastern part may be the remains of a kerb that survives elsewhere as a buried feature, and an irregular mound up to 0.25 metres high in the centre may be a central mound.

The eastern cairn is a bank 2 metres wide around an inside 10 metres across, with a few edge-set stones that suggest a kerb survives. A slight hollow 4.9 metres wide around the outside of the bank is the quarry ditch that supplied the stone. In the south-east part of the cairn six upright slabs, up to 0.6 metres high, mark the edge of a rectangular hollow 0.3 metres deep that may be the remains of a cist or chamber. A small mound 4.2 metres across and up to 0.7 metres high stands 0.6 metres from the north-east edge of the ring. A small central hollow may be early partial digging, but its position inside the ditch suggests it is more recent.
