These two hut circles are the remains of Bronze Age dwellings, likely dating to the second millennium BC when Dartmoor supported a dispersed farming population. The circular stone foundations would once have held timber-framed roundhouses, their forms still legible in the moorland turf today. They sit within a landscape thick with prehistoric evidence: cairns, field systems and other settlements that speak to an era when the high moor was actively managed and inhabited.
Like many of Dartmoor's hut circles, these structures offer a tangible connection to the people who lived and worked on the moor thousands of years ago. Their location north of Lower Blackaton places them within a wider pattern of Bronze Age settlement that clusters across the granite plateaux. The site is scheduled for protection because of its archaeological significance and its contribution to understanding how communities organised themselves on Dartmoor in prehistory.
