Tavistock Town Council

Tavistock Town Council is the local council for the town of Tavistock in Devon, on the edge of Dartmoor. It traces its origins to the Victorian-era Tavistock Urban District Council, which took on a substantial portfolio of property and land formerly owned by the Duke of Bedford. When local government was reorganised in 1974, the parish council serving the old urban area was renamed Tavistock Town Council, with its chairman becoming the Town Mayor. This history makes it unusual among town and parish councils: alongside its civic functions it is a major property owner in the town, managing assets that include the historic Tavistock Town Hall, the Pannier Market, the Butchers' Hall, the town cemetery, allotments, parks and Whitchurch Down. The Council has 17 elected members representing the North, South East and South West wards, last elected in May 2023, with the next elections due in May 2027. Full Council normally meets every four to six weeks, with separate committees handling planning and licensing and budget matters. The Town Council employs around 28 staff, led by the Town Clerk, to run its services and property holdings on behalf of Tavistock residents.
