Skylark

Princetown, Yelverton, Devon

Part of Princetown →

Skylark is a unique FM radio station for Dartmoor that began broadcasting in 2020 and gives voice to the landscape. If you are a Dartmoor resident or visitor, this is your radio station: you are invited to listen on 105.8 and 107.6 FM, and to create the broadcasts together. All its sounds are recorded within the National Park, and everyone is welcome to take part.

Skylark says it is the only Ofcom licensed station specifically for Dartmoor, on air since October 2020. Unlike any other radio station, it has abandoned schedules and programmes in favour of a continuous, ever-changing and emerging sound collage that brings voices and noises from all over Dartmoor together: oral histories, new music, and live audio streams from people, animals, plants and weather, woven into an endless and evolving song. It can only be heard in Dartmoor National Park or nearby. The two transmitters broadcast on 105.8 FM from Princetown and 107.6 FM from Holne.

It works with other community organisations to create inclusive and creative media that challenges the idea of what media is and who it is for, and it celebrates analogue technologies, playfulness and spending time together outdoors.

Create

All who live, work and visit Dartmoor are invited to create this radio station together. Skylark welcomes contributions of original, local recordings: local voices talking about their lives, original creative writing, out of copyright texts, field recordings from Dartmoor places, and sounds of everyday life. Recordings can be sent through the form on its Create page; if you have other media, such as cassette tapes, get in touch. The site also has recording tips, and the scores for the tones and phrases that hold the station's sound together, which it would like recorded on any acoustic instrument.

Collaborations

Many of the audio fragments played on Skylark are created by community groups across Dartmoor, taking part in workshops and projects. Skylark works in a flexible and responsive manner, tailoring each project to the needs of each group. Its collaborations pages include Robert Herrick, Dartmoor care homes, Mary Tavy and Brentor Community Primary School, Yarner Wood National Nature Reserve, a Radio Art Zone, a Spring Symposium (2026) and Newton Abbot Museum.

Research

Skylark has been the subject of a PhD research project with the Transtechnology Research Group at Plymouth University. The thesis, Artist Designed Systems in Community Radio by Lucinda Guy (School of Art, Design and Architecture, University of Plymouth; PhD, awarded 2025), describes Skylark as a full-time licensed radio station founded by the author, a public service and research project that intends to offer an innovative way forward for community radio in the UK. The university's research portal holds the abstract and the thesis.

Go deeper with Dartefacts

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.

“My dear," said madame to her husband, "you are not eating." "No, precious!" he replied. "I have lost my appetite." "But," retorted she, "the moor gives one." "Not to me," he responded feebly. "I don't feel well. The moor has taken mine away.”
