Roman's Cross, Sheepstor

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1009186) describes Roman's Cross, a well-preserved wayside cross of moderately coarse granite on a stepped plinth outside the west gate of Sheepstor churchyard. It is listed Grade II. It was restored in 1919, when new arms were cemented on and the plinth was built, having been used as a rubbing post in a nearby field. It lies in the parish of Sheepstor, about 0.8 km south-west of Sheeps Tor and 1.9 km east of Meavy.

Above the plinth the cross is 1.62 metres high. The shaft is nearly square, about 0.3 by 0.29 metres, with a chamfer 60 millimetres wide, and is cemented into a gap between four blocks of granite. A relief Maltese cross is cut on the north-west side, and on the south-east side a relief cross survives only below the arms. The head rises 0.2 metres above the arms, with its top broken on the south-east side and restored in cement. The new splayed arms run nearly north-east to south-west and are 0.68 metres across.

The plinth is a modern granite structure in three steps, each about 0.3 metres high, made of four blocks a layer, some with drill marks and some once gateposts. The lowest of the three is 2.25 by 2.05 metres. Because the ground slopes, the base of the cross is only about 0.4 metres above the path to the churchyard gate on the north-east side, and there is a drop of about 1.4 metres to the road on the south-west.
