Rattlebrook Peat Works

The Rattlebrook Peat Works sits in one of the bleaker corners of the high moor, where the Rattlebrook cuts through boggy ground below Rattlebrook Head. The West of England Compressed Peat Company built a standard gauge railway here in 1879 to bring peat down to Bridestowe, climbing around 350 metres over nearly five miles. The venture failed and the line closed in 1931, but the trackway was used by lorries into the 1950s and you can still follow its course across the moor today.
