Early on 19 May 1941 a German Junkers Ju 88 crashed on the high ground near Burrator Reservoir. All four crew died. Two websites describe it, both citing Robert Jones's and Graham Lewis's books, and they put the crash in different places. The position on this page is a best guess.

  • Aircraft: Junkers Ju 88A-5, code 7T+AH (one source)
  • Unit: 1 Staffel, Kustenfliegergruppe 606, from Lannion in Brittany
  • Date: 19 May 1941, about 02:30
  • Crew: Four, all killed
  • Grid reference: SX 56115 69295 (approximate: sources disagree)

What is known

The aircraft was on a shipping sortie. The crew were first buried in Sheepstor churchyard and were reburied in 1963 at the German Military Cemetery at Cannock Chase.

What is not agreed

Dartefacts says it struck Leather Tor, tearing off the propellers and gondola, and burned, and describes its position as a rough guess plotted from photographs. The Dartmoor CAM walk notes put it on the ridge west of Peek Hill, with the crash at Lower Lowery beside the reservoir. I found no Devon HER record and no description of anything left on the ground.

All military aircraft crash sites in the UK are protected by the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986. It is an offence to dig, move or take anything from one without a licence from the Ministry of Defence, and many are war graves. Look, photograph, leave everything where it is.
