Milestone And Section Of Track Of Granite Tramway near Junction With Road To Green Lane

Green Lane, Bovey Tracey, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7807 7737

This milestone and adjacent stretch of track are remnants of the granite tramway that once ran across Dartmoor to Haytor. Built to transport granite from the quarries to Stover Canal, the tramway represents an important phase in the moor's industrial past, when stone extraction shaped both landscape and economy.

Today, visitors walking the roads and paths near Haytor can still trace fragments of this Victorian engineering. The granite sets of the track bed remain visible in places, and the milestone itself is a modest but tangible link to the working moor of the 19th century. It stands as a quiet reminder that Dartmoor's character has been carved by human industry as much as by geology and time.

Historic England listed designation: Milestone And Section Of Track Of Granite Tramway On North-West Side Of Road To Haytor, About 90M North-East Of Junction With Road To Green Lane
