Hut Circles

Grid ref: SX 6706 8413

These hut circles are the ghostly footprints of Bronze Age settlements, their low stone walls still visible across the exposed moorland. Built over three thousand years ago, they offer a direct connection to the people who first shaped this landscape, herding livestock and farming the high ground when Dartmoor was far less wild than it appears today.

Walking among them, you sense the harshness of life here—the wind, the weather, the isolation. Yet someone chose to build here, and many others followed. The circles cluster naturally where water and shelter converge, and standing among the ruins, you begin to read the ancient logic of settlement on the moor.
