Hangershell Rock

Bittaford, Devon

Grid ref: SX 6549 5935

Hangershell Rock, a small tor on Harford Moor, stands out as a unique feature on what initially appears to be a long, featureless ridge. The rock, with its characteristic granite formation, offers a commanding view of the surrounding landscape, particularly from above the head of Butter Brook. The name has evolved over time, with early records showing it as 'Hanger's Shiel' in the 1500s, and later as 'Hangershill' in the 1800s.
