Former Guildhall, Tavistock

Historic England's listing for the former Guildhall, police station, attached railings and boundary walls in Guildhall Square, Tavistock (list entry 1309358, listed Grade II* on 7 September 1951, with a minor amendment in March 2022) describes a purpose-built combined court and police station with a former police accommodation block and a fire engine house. It dates from about 1848, incorporating some late 15th-century fabric, with late 19th- and late 20th-century alterations. It was designed first by John Foulston and then by Theophilus Jones for the Duke of Bedford. It lies in the parish of Tavistock, about 2 km north-west of Whitchurch.

The materials are mostly Hurdwick stone with granite dressings and an embattled parapet above a moulded cornice, with crocketed pinnacles on the parapets and slate roofs. The long plan lies on the historic plots that mark the south-east side of the monastic Great Court of Tavistock Abbey. From north to south it has the former police accommodation block and fire engine house, built on a different alignment and now the police station; a three-storey building called Trowte's House, which has a late 15th-century structure within it; and at the south end the Guildhall itself, with a courtroom on the ground floor and a semi-basement that was the first police station. The west front is Gothic. The Guildhall is a single storey with a semi-basement, a central gabled bay with a single-light cusped window, a projecting embattled porch with a round-headed outer doorway whose spandrels are carved with quatrefoils, and granite windows at semi-basement level lighting the former cells, some still barred.
