Foale's Arrishes

Grid ref: SX 7378 7587

Foale's Arrishes is a Bronze Age archaeological site where the moorland reveals its deepest past. Walking here, you encounter the physical traces of people who settled on Dartmoor over 3,000 years ago—stone circles, cairns, and the subtle depressions that mark where roundhouses once stood. The landscape itself is the archive.

This is not a managed or manicured site; it requires attention and patience to read. The exposed granite, wet hollows, and wind-scoured ridges of the moor create the same challenging environment that Bronze Age communities navigated. Standing among these remains, the moorland's remote character becomes a window into how people lived and worked on high ground when the climate was warmer and settlement patterns extended far beyond the lowlands.
