Enclosure with hut circles on Gutter Tor

This scheduled monument comprises a group of Bronze Age hut circles arranged within an enclosure on Gutter Tor. The circular stone foundations are typical of domestic settlements that dotted Dartmoor during the Bronze Age, when the moor supported a more extensive population than in later periods. The enclosure itself may have served to define and protect the settlement, or to mark it as a distinct community within the wider landscape.

Today the site remains as scattered stone circles and rubble among the rough moorland vegetation. Like many Dartmoor Bronze Age sites, it offers a tangible connection to the people who lived and worked on the high moor thousands of years ago, adapting to a landscape that has changed little in its essentials since their time.
