Dinah Tuckett

Two Bridges, Devon

Part of Two Bridges →

Dinah Tuckett kept Dunnabridge Pound. In 1937 she told George VI she had worked there "53 years come Lady Day", which puts her start at about 1884.

In June 1936, aged 68, she was first in line when Duchy tenants were presented to Edward VIII. He shook her hand and offered condolences on the death of her brother. She met George VI the following year. All of this comes from one article, by Tim Sandles on Legendary Dartmoor, and the original newspaper report has not been traced.

The shelter inside the pound is called Dinah's Chair or the Judge's Chair. Legendary Dartmoor names her and her husband Sam as the last keepers, known for their harshness. The Megalithic Portal calls her "Miss Dinah Tuckett", so whether she was married is not clear. Crossing thought the chair might be a dolmen.
