Chris Chapman is a documentary photographer, born in Wigan, Lancashire, in 1952. He studied at Newport College of Art in South Wales, where he joined a documentary photography course run by the Magnum photographer David Hurn. He moved to Dartmoor in 1975 and has lived and worked around Throwleigh since, photographing hill farming, village life and the moorland landscape, mostly in black and white.
His books include The Right Side of the Hedge (1977), Wild Goose and Riddon: The Dartmoor Photographs of Chris Chapman (2000), Silence at Ramscliffe (2005, with James Crowden), A Photographic Friendship (2022, with James Ravilious) and Hallowed Earth: A Lifetime in Photography (2025). He has also made documentary films, including Wild River, Cold Stone (2009). His work is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Arts Council of England collection and the International Center of Photography in New York.
The Dartmoor Society gave him its 2008 award for his documentary photography of people and place. In 2000 he formed the Three Hares Project with Tom Greeves and Sue Andrew, which led to the book The Three Hares: A Curiosity Worth Regarding (2016). Since 2022 a permanent exhibition of his Dartmoor photographs has been on show at Providence Methodist Chapel, Throwleigh.
