Richard Cabell, a squire of Brook Hall in the parish of Buckfastleigh, died on 5 July 1677 with a reputation bad enough that, according to local tradition, his neighbours built a stone structure over his grave with iron bars across the front, to keep him from getting out. Arthur Conan Doyle 's own account of where he got the idea for The Hound of the Baskervilles names no person or place at all, so the popular claim that Cabell's tomb was specifically the legend journalist Bertram Fletcher Robinson told Doyle in 1901 is tradition, not something either man confirmed in writing.
