This is a prehistoric hut circle, likely dating to the Bronze Age, situated on open moorland 50 metres west of Western Red Lake. Stone hut circles are among Dartmoor's most common archaeological remains, the foundations of roundhouses that once sheltered farming communities on the high moor. What survives today is the stone-built perimeter of the structure, visible as a low circular bank or ring of stones.
The site sits within the wider landscape of ancient settlement on Dartmoor, part of a pattern of habitation that flourished when the climate was warmer and the moor more extensively farmed. Visiting requires navigation of open moorland and conditions underfoot can be rough and wet. The monument is protected and should be approached with care to avoid disturbance.
